Book Review

Diabetic Eye Disease, by A. Paul Chous, M.A., O.D.

d Association Publishers 800-827-7903

When I developed type 1 diabetes, it was hard enough to learn how to care for myself, but is became obvious to my husband and me that our two children also had to learn. It took our daughter only a short time to learn what Mom looked like and sounded like when her blood glucose level was too low or high, and that she was capable of helping.

Here is a book I certainly could have used at that time. The information is simple to understand, and the author, a diabetic herself, shares just what a child needs to know to feel a part of a family that has changed with that medical diagnosis.

The illustrations are pleasant, lightening the message of a disease like diabetes for a child. The book is one to be shared as the information may be the beginning of many questions. A very good first step to understanding, it is aimed at pre-teens that need information about diabetes so they can both forgive behavior and help protect the family member with diabetes.

If you or someone you know has diabetes and has youngsters, why not give this short book a look? It even has word games at the end to make sure your young reader has correctly understood the information presented. A family reading every so often could go a long way to alleviate fears and empower your children.
