In Front of the Fire Dinner Party

During the winter months, even when we lived in tropical climates, we usually had the fireplace glowing on a nippy or chilly evening. When we lived in snow country, a fire was routine for keeping the house warm. And what a wonderful, romantic place to entertain! Few people can resist throwing on a few dried pinecones or sprinkle on some fireplace crystals for a burst of orange and blue flames. You can do as we did here and move the kitchen table in front of the living room fireplace. Or, spread a warm comforter or blanket on the floor with some fat, fluffy pillows for lounging. With the CD player is programmed to play soft music and the lights turned low, the conversation and fellowship is bound to flow freely.

You can also drag a low coffee table into the area for eating. The main course comes in a bowl, requiring only a large spoon and a large linen napkin. Keep the dishes casual. Mugs are easier to handle than tall glasses so plan to serve a warm beverage, rather than something cold. For flowers, opt for potted mums or other colorful flowers, set away from the direct heat of the fireplace. If you like, you can set lighted votive candles about the room; just keep a watch to make sure they don’t burn down or get knocked over.

Before you light the fireplace, check and make sure the flu is open, especially if you haven’t used it since last winter. Light the fire and have plenty of extra logs handy for adding later.

Start your dinner with hot spiced Bloody Mary’s (ours are without the vodka -- if you wish to add it, get your doctor’s permission first), followed by a spicy Louisiana-style shrimp and chicken gumbo, served in individual bowls into you’ve stirred a portion of cooked rice. Settle back and enjoy the conversation and good food with friends.

Dessert is a quick version of Pear Tart, topped with fat-free no sugar added vanilla ice cream. When you’re ready to serve the dessert, stack the bowls in the dishwasher while the coffee or tea is being made. Once the dessert’s served, you’re off-duty until after your guests have left and then, clean-up is a snap. The whole meal is simple, but warming and delicious...perfect when the temperature’s approaching freezing outside.
