Mother's Day Breakfast

May is the month we celebrate our mothers, and all of those lovely women who have nurtured us over the years. In years past we have shared different meals as part of this celebration, but never have we given recipes for a breakfast to remember. So this month we share a breakfast to remember.

We know that you will know which gift to purchase for your mother, but here are some ideas for a mom who has diabetes.

  • How about a membership in a hospital based gym? You can go with mom and you know that the trainers at these types of gyms are aware of people who have special medical needs.
  • If you asked me what I would like, it would be a special time with my children. I'd love a week at a spa with my daughter or a week at a national park with my son and his young sons.
  • Trips are always nice. Give what you can afford, even if it's a ride to a special restaurant and home. A short cruise, a weekend in closest large city, or a trip to Disney Land, all would make good gifts.
  • Mother's Day is the day for that special hand bag, piece of jewelry, silk night gown or anything that will spoil mom.
  • For her diabetes, if you decide on a trip anywhere, add an insulin cooler so she can feel confident traveling in hot weather, and an updated medical bracelet or necklace in gold or silver.
  • New walking shoes or workout clothes sends a good message and are always needed.
  • A house cleaning, especially windows and high shelves, will certainly be welcomed.. Is the house clean; then how about a family house or room painting week-end?
  • One of our cookbooks - The Joslin Diabetes Gourmet if your mom is actively cooking for her family and friends, The Joslin Diabetes Quick and Easy if your mom is now cooking for only one or two again, or The Joslin Healthy Carbohydrate if your mom needs new ideas on how to cook all of those carbohydrates that are supposed to make up 60% of her diet.
Now for our breakfast, do bring flowers to be planted if mom likes to garden. Notice the picture of the azalea. We made sure that what we bought one that could be transplanted. If mom doesn't garden, then freshly cut flowers or an indoor plant may be just what the doctor ordered. Breakfast does not mean jelly jar glasses. Use what you think mom would like. If she loves her best china, that needs to be washed by hand, by all means use it. We tend to use our luncheon dishes and decorate the table with gifts, flowers, plants etc, so that Mom knows this is not just another day. We also make sure that mom has her favorite Sunday newspaper and plenty of time to read it. Then after a light lunch perhaps the family can grill a supper of fresh vegetables and fish for mom, The Queen for the Day. Happy Mother's Day.

Our menu is one of my favorites. It is easy to prepare, and elegant to eat. It shows off the fresh fruits and vegetables of the season.
