Book Review: What to Expect When You have Diabetes

Book Review: What to Expect When You have Diabetes
November is National Diabetes Month. We were asked to review the updated “tips” book from the ADA titled What to Expect When You have Diabetes. This is one of those books that shares simple information for the newly diagnosed and for those who want to check out what they think is true about living with this disease. Like most of the books written by the ADA the answers are concise and easy to understand. In this book you’ll get questions and answers about the following subjects: Now that you have diabetes, Blood-sugar high and low, Living well—diet and nutrition, (sugar, Fat, dining out, general), Living well— Matters of the heart, Living well—weight management and exercise, Medications (diabetes and alternative treatments, diabetes and mediations for other conditions), Foot conditions, Miscellaneous complications, Diabetes and Pregnancy, and finally prevention basics. This is a jumping off point type of book. The answers to some very important questions are usually less than a page. Remember that books for diabetics use large print and are spaced well because of eye diseases which are complications of unchecked blood glucose levels. We like this book. It’s very easy to read and gives you just enough information so that you will have many more questions for your health care team about the subjects presented. The ADA does not sugar coat subject matter so you’ll come away with a basic course in Diabetes 101. This is the perfect stocking stuffer for a newly diagnosed diabetic or for someone who is finally trying to get tight control. Congrats ADA!
